Shorty’s Lesson about Write-In Candidates

February 21st, 2011 by Shorty

Write-in

I called the Chicago Board of Elections to find out what a write-in candidate was. I was told that a write-in candidate did not meet the qualifications of being on the ballot.  Their eligibility was challenged and the court ruled against them. However, their names can still be written in on election day.  It is unknown if any write-in candidates have actually won elections.

Can someone answer the following questions for me?

  1. Are write-in candidates taken seriously?
  2. Why would people vote for write-in candidates if they didn’t qualify to be on the ballot?
  3. Can you write your own name even if you are not running for office?

Another lesson for today. Apparently, there is a court process when the petitions of potential candidates  are challenged.  Guess who pays for these court dates? Not the candidates. So, that is more money that is being taken away from relevant city services for unknown procedures and processes.  I can’t help but wonder: how much was actually spent on these proceedings this year?  After comparing the Aldermanic hopeful list in December to the current list, quite a few people have been  removed. And many were challenged.

What are your thoughts about write-in candidates?

FYI: Squatters Have Rights, Too!

December 9th, 2010 by Shorty

squatter

Guess what? If a squatter occupies your property unauthorized and unannounced, you CANNOT put them out.  According to dictionary.com, a squatter is “a person who settles on land or occupies property without title, right, or payment of rent.”  As a property owner, you have to treat these people the same way you would paying tenants.  It’s not right, but it’s the law.

Listing of February 2011 Chicago Candidates

December 6th, 2010 by Shorty

candidate

I made several attempts to download the candidate listing from Chicago Board of Elections site, but the link didn’t load.  So, I contacted them directly for the list.  I even notified them that the link did not work.  Here is the response I received.

“Dear Voter,

Attached please find the list that is currently on the Board’s web site.”

Although I appreciate the list that was provided, this response annoyed me.  If I were able to get the  information directly from the site, I would not had been contacting them.   And, this person should have checked the link before responding.  Even though the person gave me what I needed, they still didn’t correct the problem.  Gotta love the efficiency of city workers!

So, here is the list of mayoral, aldermanic, city treasurer and city clerk hopefuls for February 2011.

Blunts: 2 for $1

November 29th, 2010 by Shorty
Blunts Blunts for Sale

Do You Have a Problem with This?

I turned purple when I saw this ad for blunts for sale. I was livid.  I immediately called my alderman’s office to report it.  Apparently, they are aware.  I was told they were going to call some department to report it.  They also also asked me if I minded identifying myself on the report.  No, I don’t.  In fact, I wish they would come to my site for evidence.

Let me share why my chocolate self turned purple after I saw this ad.

First of all, the owners are advertising this crap  like it’s OK.  They wouldn’t sell this in their own communities.  If they did, they wouldn’t have a big huge sign like this one announcing it.

Second, I wondered how many people actually cared after seeing it.  There’s a huge level of apathy in communities today, which is why such things continue to happen.  No one cares until something happens to them personally.

Lastly, I wondered how many people actually called someone with authority to report their dissatisfaction with this ad.  People these days tend to talk a lot about issues but don’t do anything at all.  The least they can do with all their yapping is to report problems to people in position to do something about it since they are not going to do anything about it personally.

Since I have expressed my anger with this ad, I really would like to know: does anyone else have a problem with blunts being sold out of a neighborhood stores?

Newsflash: The South Side Actually Begins at Madison Street

November 21st, 2010 by Shorty

State Street Chicago

I am sharing this information because there are people who really don’t know where the South Side actually began.  I know this will be a great disappointment for everyone who have been led to believe that they are not really on the South Side for economic and political purposes, so allow me to explain.

The intersection of Madison (0 East and West) and State Street (0 North and South) are the starting points of this city.  Technically, anything  south of Madison is the South Side.  Technically.  Politically and economically, the farther South you go, the less your community is deemed desirable unless you have a certain income.

If you notice, not many communities south of 35th Street are on tourists maps.  I did see one that showed the city through 55th Street which is probably due to University of Chicago, Hyde Park and the Museum of Science and Industry.  I would like to think that the creators of that map had DuSable Museum of African American History in mind, but that is highly unlikely.  Even the South Shore Cultural Center is largely ignored and that has been a prominent establishment in the community since it was developed.

Anyway, I just wanted to share that devastating news to everyone living between 0 and 22nd Streets (N to S).

Yes, you are South Siders despite the names that have been provided for economic purpose.

If you would like to discuss your devastating circumstances, just leave a comment and I’ll respond as soon as I can.

Get Out and Vote TODAY…They Are!

November 2nd, 2010 by Shorty

I know we are experiencing a political circus these days, but it is more crucial than ever to get out and vote today. If you think the economy and your personal circumstances are less-than-desirable now, they are going to get worse if people with conservative views and power get control. You’re going to be up a creek without a paddle….or a boat. You will be hanging on for dear life which could have been avoided had you taken the time to vote.

“Your vote is your voice” is not just a slogan; it’s a reality. Your decision NOT to vote is actually a vote. So, get out and vote today!

Vote on November 2nd

October 29th, 2010 by Shorty

votes2

As the November 2nd election day quickly approaches, I highly encourage you to vote if you haven’t done so already.  If you don’t know who to vote for, visit the state’s Board of Elections, visit the websites of the candidates, check out the political sections of newspapers… Do whatever it takes to educate yourself and get out and vote.

Failing to vote reduces your opportunities to complain or challenge any laws that are implemented by the new leaders.

Ignorance is not bliss.  Read up on 7 Ways to Educate Yourself this Election Season, and be sure to go out and vote next Tuesday, November 2, 2010.
