The African American Initiative is Reaching Black Boys in Roseland

October 5th, 2011 by Shorty

Reaching Black Boys

I had the pleasure of interviewing Larry Phillips, M.A., LCPC. He is the facilitator of the African American Initiative at Metropolitan Family Services (MFS).  This program serves African American males ages 10 – 17 and their families in the Roseland community, one of the most distressed communities in Chicago. Mr. Phillips gives a background on the organization and how the community can help the program and the participants. Listen to what he has to say now.

Have you and your child participated in the African American Initiative? What was your experience?

Diane Latiker Opens Her Home & Heart to Young People in Roseland

Kids Off the Bock Logo

I had the pleasure of interviewing Diane Latiker, the Executive Director of Kids Off the Block youth program located in the Roseland community on Chicago’s South Side. Diane is the perfect example of a community leader. She opened her heart and home to ALL the kids in her community to keep them safe. They didn’t know her and she didn’t know them, but she made them feel at home and they kept returning. Her genuine concern for the young people probably saved numerous lives from untimely deaths. Listen to her story of how she got started, what keeps her going and how the community can help her continue to keep young people off the street, which helps save their lives.

One of Chicago’s Finest at His Worse: No Response to Student Fight on 95th Street

May 28th, 2011 by Shorty

Chicago Police

This is a story told to me by a friend on Friday, May 27, 2011.

While walking to the red line train on 95th Street in the 2:00 hour, he saw a bunch of kids in Abbot Park following a fight by students that attend Harlan Community Academy.  He didn’t see any police officers around, so he kept on walking and saw an officer sitting in his car. He told the officer what was happening. The cop responded that there were officers in the park. When my friend told him that no officers were around, the officer was pretty nonchalant. He didn’t even call for help.

Needless to say, my friend was angry and called me to share. He also told me to check the papers today to see if I read about any teens being beating. The only problem with that is – news media sources don’t care that much about South Side happenings so it may not appear. And, the officer’s reaction would have been waaaaaay different if he was on the North Side.

What would you have done in this situation? Do you know any of the students involved?

AT&T Needs to Improve Their Service In Roseland

December 16th, 2010 by Shorty

I have a buddy who lives in Roseland and has been experiencing major internet issues which is hindering her productivity as a home-based business owner.  She said that it seems like each time a technician comes out to repair her issues, her service gets progressively worse.  So, one has to wonder: Is she experiencing issues because of poor connectivity or poorly skilled technicians?

AT&T, what’s up??
