Do You Know Erica & Myah Jackson ~aka~ The Birdie Sisters?

October 21st, 2011 by Shorty

Do you know Erika & Myah Jackson ~aka The Birdie Sisters?

Thirteen-year-old Erica and eleven-year-old Maya are junior golf champions from the South Side of Chicago. On September 10, Myah placed 1st and Erica won 2nd place at the 2011 Illinois Elementary School (IES) Golf Tournament. Myah was also the player of the year. They were the only players from Chicago in this competition, and they beat over 35 more girls to win 1st and 2nd place.

Troy Davis’ Case Exemplifies Everything Wrong with America

September 22nd, 2011 by Shorty

Troy Davis

If you are not familiar with the Troy Davis case, educate yourself by going doing a Google search. In the meantime, allow me to share my thoughts after following it for a few months and watching reports of his last hours on earth. Many thanks to Democracy Now for their courage to cover this story, because we would not have known what was happening by watching mainstream media.

  1. Racism in America will never end. There is no such thing as “post-racial.” The only thing we can do is pray that enough people care to try to fight all of the systems created to keep people unequal. Start by voting in this upcoming election.
  2. Lives of poor people are dispensable.
  3. Lives of black people are not valued. If they were, the black prison population would not be over 50% when they are only approximately 13% of the population. And there were several people on Twitter who pointed out that Casey Anthony, a white woman who had evidence that she murdered her child is walking free while Troy Davis, a black man, died via lethal ejection with little or no evidence.
  4. What does “innocent until proven guilty” really means in America?
  5. America is not longer a democracy, it is a plutarchy. This means that things are run by the wealthy and will continue to benefit the wealthy. Middle class (what’s left of it) and poor people be damned.
  6. The United States justice system is just a more sophisticated form of slavery. The justice system as whole does not begin with the prison system. It starts with social, education and employment control which usually somehow ends in some aspect of a person’s life being controlled, and ultimately determined by the government.
  7. The justice system works for people with money on so many levels. But here are four ways this happens. First, people with money can afford good attorneys to represent them. Second, rich people can slip a few dollars to a few key people to throw out or rule in their favor. Thirdly, some of them are private investors in the prison system. Fourth, many are profiting from the cheap labor provided by prisoners.
  8. American government at all levels is operating from personal power is more important than the people who pay me through their taxes to represent them. We don’t need Troy Davis to tell us that. Just watch news reports very closely.
  9. We all need to wonder: How many more Troy Davises have lost their lives, are sitting on death row or who are currently waiting to be sentenced? And how can their cases be heard before their lives are snuffed by people who could care less.
  10. We are ALL Troy Davis.  If they can kill an innocent man with very little evidence, people with power can snatch us up at any time for something we did not do and try to charge us “just because.”

I just needed to share my thoughts. It gets deeper than this, but this is all I can stomach for now. What do you think?

August 21st, 2011 by Shorty

Comic Con Chicago was huge. There were celebrities, vendors, artists and exciting attendees. Below are just a few artists that shared their talents in the  Artist Alley. I did not get their names, but all of the creative geniuses in that place should be commended for their works.

Tommy Perez - Chicago Actor

Tommy Perez - Chicago Actor

I had a great time at Comic Con and Chicago, and ran into a some interesting and very cool people. One particular person was an intentional unexpected blessing. Allow me to explain. My goal was to interview randomly selected visitors and artists. Like anything else “random,” you just never know what you’re going to get. well, I was blessed to speak with Tommy, Perez, an actor who really loves Comic Con.

He not only shared his love for Comic Con, he is adamant about his “Plan A.”  Listen to his story to hear his passion for both.

8 Reasons Why the Chicago Public Library Card is Priceless

June 24th, 2010 by Shorty

Chicago Public Library Card

Of all the items I carry in my wallet, my Chicago public library card is the second most valuable — next to my driver’s license. Not only is the little green and white card the key to a world of possibilities; it is totally priceless. Let me tell you why.

1.Library cards are FREE. There are no fees, charges or taxes for owning the card. Just complete an application and provide proof of identity, a current address and Chicago residency.

2.Obtain a FREE education via books, periodicals, movies, museum passes, and other special perks offered by individual libraries. There is one main library, 76 neighborhood branches, and three regional facilities in the Chicago library system. Books can also be borrowed from suburban libraries according to the reciprocity policy. Therefore, this free education is very easy to obtain.

3.Accounts can be accessed online 24/7 with a valid library card for FREE. Records will show how many books that are checked out; when they are due; and any other information that is relevant to individual accounts.

4.Conduct research from home for FREE. Periodicals and other reference materials used for research can be found on the library’s website 24/7. There are only a couple resources that can only be found on the library databases; otherwise, all other research can be conducted remotely.

5.FREE Internet and WiFi are available at all libraries. Library cards are required for internet access; WiFi can be accessed through individual computers.

6.Gain FREE entry into most of Chicago museums with museum passes. Passes can be checked out for up to seven days. Although they do not allow entry into the extra attractions at museums, patrons can walk in for no charge.

7.After searching for books online, patrons can request to have books sent to the ANY library of their choice for FREE. Books can be delivered to a branch close to home or not.

8.Other benefits include FREE author discussions, exhibits and programs for individuals of all ages.

Although the library system offers lots of free stuff, patrons do have to pay late fees and any charges accrued for items checked out if a library card is lost or stolen. Fines range from $.20 a day for books and music up to $2 a day for movies and museum passes. Fortunately, there are maximum fines per item. Patrons won’t go broke unless they have a lot of items borrowed.

Essentially, getting a FREE library card; access to a FREE education via books, movies, and museum passes; and FREE computer access, WiFI and online research are totally priceless.

How Reliable Are The Red Light Enforcers?

May 19th, 2010 by Shorty

red light enforcement

I got a ticket and was not happy. I watched the video that showed my car turning right on the red light without stopping at the corner.  I then looked at the back of the ticket to find out if I had indeed The back of the form reads: “Please note that you can be cited for failing to bring your vehicle to a complete stop before turning right when the light is red.”

A thought occurred to me as I watched the video. How do I know the video wasn’t rigged? Yes, this is a legitimate question. Especially in the city of Chicago where credibility and money are waaaaaaaaaaaay short.

I’m not denying that I turned the corner without stopping.  However, I am questioning the reliability of the people who handle the footage of the cameras. I know that it’s very easy to manipulate images with photo editing software.  Adjusting video frames is pretty simple, too, with knowledge of video editing software.  Unknowing audiences would be none-the-wiser.

What really makes me question the videos at all is my great city of Chicago.  The city that is making its citizens carry the weight of its financial burden which resulted from mismanagement, greed, and shady transactions.  I know Chicago is not the only city in this situation, however, it’s the one I live in and the one I can speak on.

Do I think my video was rigged? I don’t know.  Do I think someone would change it on purpose to collect money? Absolutely.

So, today I have to ask you: Do you think the red light enforcers are reliable?

I Can’t Find Information on Fun Town Amusement Park

April 4th, 2010 by Shorty

Roller Coaster

I’ve started conducting research on amusement parks in Chicago, and there is very little information about Fun Town Amusement Park that was located on 95th & Stony Island.  I did find that the company was in existence from  1950 – 1982. With over thirty years of history on record, why isn’t there more information about Fun Town amusement park?

After a few hours of research, the only site that produced results was the Roller Coaster Database, and that was to mention the two roller coasters in the park.

If anyone has any knowledge or photos of Fun Town Amusement Park, please share.  Thanks so much.
