Joyland Park was The Little Known Black History Fact on Tom Joyner

November 18th, 2010 by Shorty

carnival rides

Joyland Park, the only African-American-owned amusement park in Chicago, was the Little Known Black History Fact on the Tom Joyner Morning Show on yesterday.  Located at 3301 S. Wabash in Bronzeville, Joyland Park existed from approximately 1923 – 1925.

Read more about Joyland Park on Black America Web News.  Check out the ad I found from the Chicago Defender in 1923.

Shorty’s note: Great things have and continue to happen on the South Side.  Unfortunately, many stories are never told because negativity sells for mainstream media.  I get that.  However, I am NOT mainstream media and there are millions of untold stories of greatness on the South Side.  And I’m on a mission to get as many out as possible.

Successful Students at Overton Elementary School

October 31st, 2010 by Shorty

Teachers at Overton Elementary School in the Bronzeville community on Chicago’s South Side have put forth much effort to help improve the educational levels of their students.  With the help of programs and games created by the Mind Research Institute, it has been done.  Check out the video below.

Do you feel as proud as I do about the successes of the young people?

I want to thank my friend, Tasha Clopton-Stubbs, a fourth grade teacher at Overton, for sharing this video.  If you know of other South Side schools with successful students and programs, be sure to share them with Shorty.

Note: I am promoting students and staff achievement at Overton Elementary School,  a Chicago Public School on the South Side and not the Mind Research Institute. However, if the Mind Research Institute wants to pay me to start promoting their programs, I’m willing to do it. :)

The Soul of Bronzeville at DuSable Museum

February 5th, 2010 by Shorty

The Bronzeville Community boasts a rich African American cultural history.  Originally known as the Black Metropolis, it became home to many Black people who fled the south in search of better opportunities in Chicago during the Great Northern Migration between 1910 and 1920.

Bronzeville gained its name by the skin color of its residents.  This little factor could not stop the greatness that resided within its borders.  Ida B. Well, Bessie Coleman, Sam Cooke, Lou Rawl and Jesse Binga are just a few of the geniuses from  this community.

Bronzeville, Club DeLisa, The Regal Theater

To ensure that these memories continue, the DuSable Museum will exhibit “The Soul of Bronzeville: The Regal, Club DeLisa and The Blues” through June 27, 2010. Curated by Gregg Parker,  original photographs, instruments, personal memorabilia, music and moving footage will be shared.

Visit www.dusablemuseum.org for more information about the exhibit, hours, and rates.
