Two Groups Committed to Better Health on the South Side of Chicago
August 31st, 2010 by Shorty
The Urban Health Initiative (UHI) of University of Chicago and the South Side Health Care Collaborative are committed to better health on the South Side.
UHI is a partnership between the University of Chicago Medical Center, public leaders, community groups and health care professionals. All of these individuals are committed to improving the quality of health for South Side residents. They also attempt to give them access to quality care regardless of income.
The South Side Healthcare Collaborative encourages preventative care by connecting individuals to primary care physicians at community centers. Providers also provide referrals to specialists. The services of SSHC not only helps build a doctor-patient relationship, it also helps to reduce major long-term illnesses and medical expenses for patients which creates financial worries. Nothing beats a peace of mind.

Health Alert: Schedule a Health Appointment Today
August 11th, 2010 by ShortyI spoke to my friend yesterday and she told me about two healthy people who died within the last week. I forgot the age of the young lady, but the young man who died was either 29 or 30 years old. Neither was overweight and there were no known health issues. Although stress is a silent killer,
As a 30-something relatively healthy individual, this freaked me out. I got my check-ups within the past few months and I would like to encourage you all to make appointments today!!!
I don’t know all of the resources available, but I can tell you about two places I’ve used personally.
Christian Community Health Center on 98th & Halsted offers pro-rated rates for services which means that the rate you pay for services is based on your income. When I was was receiving unemployment, I only had to pay the $20 co-pay for all services received.
I have also received care from the South Chicago Health Center. It is a city facility which means you may have two wait a couple hours. I received a full physical for FREE. Illinois Healthy Women offers a pink card for women which allows you to get physicals and family planning options. And, you can walk in and grab condoms out of a big garbage for your protection.
Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (IBCCP) at Mercy offers free mammograms, breast exams, pelvic exams, Pap tests and cancer treatment to uninsured and underinsured women. Screening is available to all women—regardless of income level—and all women are welcome and encouraged to contact Mercy for an appointment at 312.567.2619. Call Mercy or visit www.cancerscreening.illinois.gov for more information.
I don’t know what is available for men’s health, but I do know there are huge efforts to produce prostate cancer which has grown at alarming rates. Because men tend to neglect their health more than women, programs have grown. Visit Cook County Health System to find out which programs are available.
There are loads of HIV programs throughout the city, just call3-1-1 for information.
That’s all I have for now. What other free and low-cost programs are available in the city??

Chicago Department of Public Health South Chicago Clinic
July 15th, 2010 by ShortyI have been receiving health care services from this facility since I am uninsured, and would like to make other people aware of this health center.
Located at 2938 E. 89th Street, the South Chicago Clinic is one of the southeast side’s best kept secret. It is housed inside a former police department in the South Chicago community.
I don’t know all of the services they provide, but I can attest to the services I’ve received as a single female with no dependents. I was offered the Illinois Healthy Women, a program that allows you to get free female services and birth control. Visit http://www.illinoishealthywomen.com/ for more details.
During my last visit, I was concerned that I couldn’t receive services because I hadn’t received notification of approval or denial. The young lady at the front desk told me not to worry about it; I would still receive care.
My first visit was a little lengthy, but all visits thereafter were much shorter.
Ok, the staff members look really unconcerned, but they are cool. If they weren’t, I would have written about them a long time ago.:)
Just wanted to make you aware that this facility exists and free and low cost services are available. Like I said, I don’t all of the services that are offered at the South Chicago Clinic, but I do know that I am satisfied with my experience.
