The Illinois Conservation Corps is a six-month employment opportunity for people between the ages of 18-25. Participants will work on public lands owned or leased by the IDNR. Young adult workers must be currently unemployed and are eligible to work for up to six months.  Applicants are accepted on a rolling basis.

Workers in this program assist State Park staff to maintain buildings and grounds, pick up litter, mow, cut weeds, remove brush, patch concrete and asphalt road surfaces, issue camping permits and register state park campers. Additionally, they may assist with security and fire patrol, trail building, tool/equipment maintenance, painting and repair. They may also assist in the care and propagation of birds, clean bird pens, transport game to laying houses or breeding areas at
DNR’s three game farms. Workers may also operate hunter check stations and perform the duties associated with the maintenance of buildings and grounds as identified above.

Teen Joblessness May Hit Record in Summer 2011

June 22nd, 2011 by Shorty

(Reuters) – A record-low one in four U.S. teenagers will land a summer job in the coming months as a result of a still-poor job market and lost federal funding, according to a report issued on Monday.

As a consequence, urban studies experts said cities like Chicago — where summer unemployment among African-Americans aged 16 to 19 years approaches 90 percent — could experience a rise in street violence.

“Both national and local leadership continue to ignore the plight of youth who are most at risk for potential violence as a result of being left on the streets in the summer months when crime is at its most explosive,” Chicago Urban League President Andrea Zopp said in a statement.

The summer employment rate among U.S. teen-agers this year was projected at between 25 percent and 27 percent, based on an analysis of four decades of employment trends by Andrew Sum of the Center for Labor Market Studies at Northeastern University in Boston. That would be a post-World War Two low, while as recently as 2006 the teen summer employment rate was 37 percent.

U.S. economic growth has been sluggish since the recession ended in June 2009, with job growth lagging the recovery and unemployment still at a lofty 8.8 percent.

The long-term impact of higher summer joblessness among young people is a less-experienced work force and increased government spending due to lower lifetime earnings, reduced tax revenues and higher prison costs, experts said.

In Chicago alone, nearly 700 children were hit by gunfire last year, with 66 deaths, though the city’s overall murder rate declined, said Jack Wuest, executive director of the Alternative Schools Network which commissioned the report.

“We cannot continue to ignore the correlation between youth violence and teen employment,” Wuest said. “We know if our teens are in school or at a job they are not on the streets.”

Federal stimulus dollars directed to cities and applied to summer jobs programs have run out and the funding was not renewed by Congress, meaning 18,000 more Illinois teen-agers will be jobless this summer, according to the report.

Don’t Let the Reported Unemployment Rate Figures Fool You

May 19th, 2011 by Shorty

joblessness

Arianna Huffington cited the following March 2011 unemployment data in a recent article in the Huffington Post.

“…even though the economy added 244,000 jobs, the unemployment rate rose from 8.8 percent to 9 percent. Even worse, the unemployment rate for African-Americans jumped to 16.1 percent. And for those over the age of 55, the average length of time spent looking for a job is now over a year.”

Let’s look at how serious this really is.

There was a .2 percent increase in unemployment. While that’s what is stated on paper. Unemployment rates are even higher because they are many people who have gotten discouraged and just stopped looking for work. Realistically, it’s much higher. And there are many more people underemployed even though they have jobs. Thus, people who used to earn $50,000 or more per year are probably working $10.00 – $12.00 jobs just to pay their bills and feed their families.

The unemployment rate for American-Americans is 16.1 percent. If I had to guess, it is at least 30 percent. Again, so many people have given up. And, it seems to be some sort of conspiracy. How is it that so many black people are not working? Why are thy not being hired?  We really need to think about that.  Here’s a kicker for you. The Englewood and Roseland communities rank #2 in the highest unemployment rates after Detroit.  Chicago is NOT a poor city, but the residents are not being looked after. That is not a good look for Chi-Town.

And it takes a over year for people age 55 and over to find a job. Do you know what that means? This is age discrimination at its best. In my opinion, these are some of most reliable workers. Their work ethic was pretty good. This is the last generation that actually went to work and were productive.

But wait…there’s more.

“Our elected leaders aren’t any better — less focused on the job crisis than on arguing about how to best divvy up harsh cuts to the social safety net and programs that benefit the middle class. Meanwhile, profits for the Fortune 500 jumped by 81 percent in 2010, to $318 billion.” All you have to do is look at the ever-growing gas prices and the ever-growing profits of the largest oil companies.

How do you feel after reading these figures? Do you agree or disagree?
